![]() ![]() If the old spots got re-infected I would better understand it, but Awkward's issue is that there are new spots even when the other ones are healing. There are still pits in the shell from the old spots but they are no longer infected and slowly shrinking. This system has worked for the other shell rot spots. Dry docking seems so stressful that I worry too much of it might be counterproductive because stress suppresses the immune system. In the morning I put him back in the tank for the day and treat the water with Melafix (meant to help heal bacterial fish infections). I've been cleaning the affected areas with Betadine, washing and drying him, and then applying Neosporin and dry docking him overnight. It's definitely not from an issue with the basking platform they have an above tank basking area that's about half the size of the tank and has a full beach. I also built her an ATBA after this episode because her spot of rot was due to her basking area not being totally dry due to her weight. Then I would very gently clean her using dawn soap, apply betadine.let her dry completely and then add neosporin.then dry-docked for another 12 hours. Every 12 hours she was put into a clean/disinfected tub with 6 inches of water for about 1 hour to drink and eat. I waited until the affected area was totally healed before she went back into her tank. It may have been over-kill but she's one very special turtle and I wanted to be sure there was zero rot left. When I had to treat Pip for shell rot I treated her for somewhere around 5+ weeks. ? Is there anything in the tank that he could be damaging his shell on? Can he get 100% dry and out of the water when basking? Is it possible that you're stopping the dry docking and meds before the rot areas are truly healed? If there's still bacteria or fungus and you put the turtle back in water you are essentially feeding the fungus and it will come back. Betadine, Neosporin and dry docking worked for me the one time I had to do it. I can't answer about the products you're questioning. Maybe it's because he is shedding so heavily right now? Luckily he is still just as active and hungry as ever so it's clearly not affecting him too much. This one in particular doesn't even seem to have come from a scratch on his shell or anything, it just appeared. Every time one spot starts healing he dings his shell or something and another spot appears. On another note I have no idea how he keeps developing shell issues when I am so diligent about water changes and my two spotted turtles, known for being sensitive to water quality, are both totally fine. Do you think some of these products might be worth a try? I've been using Neosporin for now when I dry dock him, but this shell rot spot has bled a little after I cleaned the squishy stuff out (though it is a very tiny spot) and I would like to use the best product possible to help Awkward heal. ![]() ![]() They look like they are supposed to do essentially the same thing as silvadene cream in terms of disinfecting and assisting in the healing of burns and other wounds. As I understand the actual silvadene cream is prescription only, but when I searched for it on Amazon I found several similar-looking over the counter products. I'm treating shell rot on Awkward's plastron again and was wanting to try the silvadene cream that is so highly recommended on the ATP shell rot page. ![]()
